Krystian Zimerman, a Polish pianist, was about to perform the final piece of music to the audience at the Los Angeles Walt Disney Concert Hall on Sunday evening when he shocked everyone.

Towards the end of the show Zimerman stopped playing and came out with a politicized speech accusing the US of attempting to force the rest of the world with their military policy. “Get your hands off my country,” Zimerman said to all those in the concert hall, in a disagreement at the US plan to install a missile defence shield in Poland. Some people cheered and applauded him, others yelled at him to keep quiet and continue playing. This then sparked dozens of people to walk out, some of them shouting profanity before parting.

“Yes, some people when they hear the word military start marching,” said Zimerman at those who decided to leave early. He then also threatened not to return to perform in the United States anymore.

This was Zimerman’s reaction to Barack Obama’s decision, announced earlier this month, to keep the Bush-era policy of building an Anti-Ballistic Missile defence shield in Poland and the Czech Republic. The majority of Poles and Czechs are against having this missile shield installed in their country.

I am glad that some more intelligent and high profile people are showing their anger towards this. I have spoken with many Poles of whom all disagree with the plan.
